Paul Béliveau: Series Vanitas

"The Vanitas series began in 2001
and has since evolved in both design and subject matter…but the book remains constant. Paying tribute to this object of knowledge has been an opportunity to celebrate many favorite subjects such as art, literature, wine, design, noted luminaries, music, and history. By reinventing the book spine I can thus conceive an infinite dream library, which the painting makes immortal.” - Paul Béliveau, 2021

"Paul Béliveau’s Vanitas paintings create a lively dynamic between the content of his chosen publications and the designs of their book spines. While his use of vibrant colors and various painting styles are visually stimulating, his thoughtful choices about which books to place together provoke contemplation. The artist leaves collectors to ponder where these tomes might be found: a museum curator’s office, a child’s bedroom, a professor’s study, a musician’s studio. Béliveau invents layered dialogues within each work, sometimes varying books by era and other times by subject matter. Through these juxtapositions, he suggests endless possibilities of historical relationships and personal narratives." - Zola Solamente, Owner, Arden Gallery
